- 28 commercial prints of the 1950's of a stereo-photograph by George Lewis depicting Gandhi spinning while the sculptor Jo Davidson works on a bust, with printed text on the reverse by C.F.
Andrews (London, 1931). Keystone’s description: ”This is one of the rarely circulated square-topped Keystone cards, produced in the 1950’s but not widely marketed. Dwarfed by his reading
companion, his secretary Mahadev Desai, the diminutive Mahatma Gandhi hunches cross-legged over a bit of delicate handwork. Newspaper clippings lie at his feet, a testimony to the erudite mind of
this dhoti-clad giant whose outward image was, at best, curiously simple. The bottom right corner of the view reveals a skillfull artist at work on a clay bust of the Indian leader. Card reverse
details Gandhi’s humble beginnings and current accomplishments at the date of card publication. The information becomes even more poignant in light of Gandhi’s eventual assassination. Front of
the card is hand printpressed with “Keystone Stereoview Company, Manufacturers Publishers, Made in U.S.A., Meadville, PA, New York, NY, Chicago, Ill., and London, England.” The copies are from
the surplus inventory holdings of the Johnson-Shaw Stereoscopic Museum. All materials were recovered from the original Keystone factory in Meadville, PA (1892-1976), and essentially are all
