Exhibition Building Peace Without Violence - Gandhi, King, Ikeda

Exhibition on the life and work of the peace makers Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Dr. Daisaku Ikeda. Rare photographs document the principles of nonviolence as well as campaigns of nonviolent resistance in India, USA, and Japan. Moreover, rare artefacts of Gandhi, King, and Ikeda are exhibited.

Dr. Lawrence Carter (Atlanta, USA), a personal friend of Dr. Daisaku Ikeda und former co-worker of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., talks about the life and peace activities of Dr. Ikeda, the many years' president of Soka Gakkai International (SGI). The main task of the SGI is the promotion of peace and nonviolence.

• Festival programme on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; Rev. Heinrich Grosse: "To India I Come As A Pilgrim - The Significance Of Mahatma Gandhi's Philosophy Of Nonviolence For Martin Luther King"
• Speech by guest of honour, Rev. Heinrich Grosse (Hannover, Germany), an associate of M.L. King, Jr.: "Christ furnished the spirit and motivation, while Gandhi furnished the method", said Martin Luther King commenting on the Montgomery bus boycott. The Sermon on the Mount and Gandhi's methods of non-violent resistance played an important role for the civil rights movement in its attempt to abolish racial segregation in the USA. In 1959 Martin Luther King traveled to India as "Gandhi's country". He repeatedly referred to this experience. Yet King's non-violent campaigns were not only influenced by Gandhi's thoughts and actions. Accordingly, this presentation will also discuss other traditions that were of importance for King's pilgrimage to nonviolence. (German)

• Half-day seminar with Rev. Heinrich Grosse: "Between India And Vietnam - On The Development Of Martin Luther King's Philosophy Of Nonviolence"

In this half-day seminar Rev. Heinrich Grosse (Hannover, Germany), an associate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., will read and discuss texts by King showing the evolution of his philosophy of nonviolence and of his methods of action. He will discuss texts from the early period of the Southern protest movement as well as King's speeches and campaigns during the final two years of his life (1966-1968). Thus the differences between King's positions in his early and in his later years will be elaborated. King's final years were characterized by his commitment against the Vietnam war and for those suffering in Vietnam. Fighting the "giant triplets of racism, poverty and war", he advocated actions of massive, militant nonviolence. (German)

• Lecture by Rev. Heinrich Grosse: "To Speak For The Voiceless - On Martin Luther King's Importance For Us Today"

Rev. Heinrich Grosse (Hannover, Germany) is an associate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This lecture aims at tracing the different stages of King's life and work. It will become clear, that King was anything but a "harmless apostle of nonviolence". Despite all attempts to neutralize King by idolizing him, we must know: Remembering him is "dangerous", as it challenges our normal ways of thinking and acting. King was not just an advocate of underprivileged African Americans; his dream was not confined to the USA. He demanded: "We must develop a world perspective." In the world-wide fight against racism, poverty and war he wanted to be a "voice of the voiceless". Thus, we still have to ask ourselves: What are the challenges Martin Luther King's life poses for us today? (German)

Ms. Ela Gandhi is a granddaughter of the Mahatma. She lives in Durban, South Africa and has fought Apartheid together with Nelson Mandela. Ms. Gandhi was a member of the South African Parliament (African National Congress) from 1994 until 2003. As an active social worker she applies her grandfather's thoughts in favour of the socially oppressed. The seminar offers a rare opportunity to meet and talk to Ms. Gandhi. • Lecture by Ms. Ela Gandhi (South Africa): "The Relevance Of Gandhi's Teachings For Us Today"

Ms. Ela Gandhi is a granddaughter of the Mahatma. She lives in Durban, South Africa and fought apartheid together with Nelson Mandela. As a member of African National Congress (ANC), Ms. Gandhi was a member of the South African parliament from 1994 until 2003. As a social worker she illuminates the thoughts of her grandfather for the implementation of the rights of minorities. In her lecture Ms. Gandhi focuses on the relevance and necessity to apply her grandfather's teachings to fight the various forms of violence we're facing. (English, with German translation).

Documentary film about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his political-social commitment to the American civil rights movement.

• Documentary film "Mahatma" (140 min., English)

The documentary film "Mahatma" (1969) presents the life and work of Mahatma Gandhi, and his incessant search for truth, using rare original footage. The film is the result of the intense seven-years work of Gandhi's biographer Vithalbhai Jhaveri, and the Gandhi National Memorial Trust, Mumbai. The film portraits Gandhi's life in detail, and documents the Indian independence movement. The commentary is largely based on Gandhi's own words. This film is rarely shown outside India.

Entrance to the exhibition and the accompanying programme is free-of-charge (except films). The entrance to the films is €7.50 and includes the visit to the museum.

The exhibition Mahatma Gandhi - Travelling by Train was lent to the Indian Embassy at Berlin. They used it as part for their exhibit Indian Railways - Culture on the Move that has been presented on the two Berlin train stations Friedrichstrasse and Ostbahnhof.
