Devdas Gandhi wrote an article in "Pravasi", a Gujarat Daily dated 25-7-1948 on the life of his elder brother Harilal Gandhi (eldest son of Mahatma Gandhi). Harilal came to meet Devdas and other family members and offer his condolences on the death of Mahatma Gandhi. Harilal himself was ill at that time - stayed in Delhi till he felt a little better and then left for Bombay. Later on Devdas learnt in London after his tour of European countries, of the death of Harilal in Bombay on 18-6-1948. Harilal lived for 60 years - a life full of struggle. - Devdas narrates several instances from the life of Harilal. - His life in South Africa, - a devoted volunteer in all the agitation started by Gandhiji in South Africa. But later on, Harilal left S. Africa and returned to India because of his differences with Gandhiji. - Devdas refers to various aspects of Harilal's life and character - Ref. to several instances (1) death of Rasik (1928), elder son of Harilal; death of Harilal's wife (1920).

Chhaganlal Gandhi had sent a copy of his article on "Gandhiji and Ruskin" for 'Gandhi Marg' for perusal and remarks. A copy of the same was endorsed to Shri C. N. Patel who returned it with his suggestions. In the article referred to in Shri Chhaganlal's letter, the writer (Shri Chhaganlal Gandhi) writes to show how Gandhiji was inspired by Ruskin's book "Unto This Last". It was in 1904 that Gandhiji happened to read that book in the train while he was travelling from Johannesburg to Durban (South Africa). Later, in 1931, Gandhiji told th Editor of 'Spectator' in London that Ruskin's book impressed him most and that brought about a change in his life. Similarly, Gandhiji had been impressed by Tolstoy's writings also, which he had read earlier. Ruskin had established a society of selfless persons called 'St. George's Guild'. Every person had to agree to follow the rules formulated by Ruskin which he had incorporated in the Deed, which he had drafted. Those contents of that Deed, particulary Rule V, VI, & VII impressed Gandhiji very much. It was in those rules Gandhiji saw the seeds of the principles of "Satya" (Truth), "Ahimsa" (Non-violence) as well as principles of Passive Resistance. There is a note also regarding this in Mahadev Desai's diary dated 1st May 1933.
